This is a quick update on our move. Since we are transitioning to a slightly smaller place, we’ve been working on downsizing a bit and getting rid of the things we don’t need. So far, this has actually been a pretty liberating experience. Kristen and I have been able to sell a number of items on Craigslist and give away loads of good stuff to the Goodwill. It’s been difficult at points, but we’ve been trying to stick to the following motto: “If you haven’t used it lately, get rid of it!”
One of our biggest concerns has been fitting all of our kitchenware into our new, more compact kitchen. How do you know what to keep and what to toss? Well, I was able to find this handy resource on the hello kitchen! website:
The general idea is that you spread a queen-sized quilt on the ground and pile all of your kitchen supplies onto it. Whatever doesn’t fit on the quilt does not stay in the kitchen. The PDF I’ve embedded here includes a checklist of kitchen essentials, and it even gives suggestions on the number of plates, cups, etc. that the average family really needs.
Using this process, Kristen and I were able to cut the amount of kitchenware we own in half. Literally. Now the kitchen is so much easier to navigate since we only have the bare essentials. If you’re looking for a way to organize your kitchen, consider using this approach!
