The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency

Precious Ramotswe is a unique woman. She is the first and only lady private detective in the country of Botswana, a woman with a sunny disposition and a penchant for solving mysteries. She is also the main character in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, the first novel in a series of the same name written by Alexander McCall Smith.

Mma Ramotswe, as she’s called, looks at life with a unique perspective. She is very detail oriented, taking note of her surroundings wherever she goes. While on a case, any small thing could be the clue she’s looking for, so nothing should be overlooked. Fortunately, since she’s the main character of this story, readers benefit greatly from her meticulous observations. We are given a complete visual image of every setting and every event, leading to a particularly vivid experience of the story.

Precious is also very proper and innocent. She has an excellent understanding of the social conventions of her culture, and she follows them at all times. In fact, these practices and niceties are so firmly entrenched in her subconscious that she is completely surprised when others do not follow them. This adds an interesting dynamic to the story, and the reader will find a good amount of humor in Mma Ramotswe’s naïveté.

For me, the best part of this story was that it was told from a truly African perspective. The genuine, straightforward voice of the narrator made me feel like I was actually in Botswana, witnessing the story myself. It was a pleasure to absorb each page of this novel, and I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in the series.

Wow. It's Quiet Here...
